Little House in the Big Woods: Charlotte Doll
Laura Ingalls Wilder’s story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. In this first book, Little House in the Big Woods, four-year-old Laura lives in the little house with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack.
And to go with this book, of course we had to include a rag doll – remember how excited Laura was when she got Charlotte for Christmas? This beautiful 20″ doll is handmade in Canada with exquisite attention to detail. It’s a perfect gift for a little girl who is being introduced to the Little House on the Prairie Series!

The Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder have been enjoyed for decades as a truly wonderful portrayal of a pioneer girl and her family. The nine books in the series span from Little House in the Big Woods, which takes place in 1871 when four-year-old Laura lived in a little log cabin in the woods in Wisconsin, all the way to 1888 in The First Four Years when Laura is married and raising a family of her own.
In this first book, Little House in the Big Woods, four-year-old Laura lives in the little house with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. In that book, the Ingalls family prepares for the long, cold winter by growing and preserving all the food that they can. We are also treated to a heartwarming view of a pioneer Christmas from the eyes of a little girl, and the unforgettable moment when Laura receives her first real doll. In this beautiful collector’s edition of Little House in the Big Woods, Garth Williams’ memorable illustrations are presented in full colour.
To accompany the book, we thought about wrapping a corncob in a handkerchief and calling this the Susan gift set, but that seemed a bit uninspired. And besides, any fan of the Little House books remembers the iconic scene where Laura gets her very first real doll that she names Charlotte. How could we not bundle this book with a rag doll of our own?
She was a beautiful doll. She had a face of white cloth with black button eyes. A black pencil had made her eyebrows, and her cheeks and her mouth were red with the ink made from pokeberries. Her hair was black yarn that had been knit and raveled, so that it was curly.
She had little red flannel stockings and little black cloth gaiters for shoes, and her dress was pretty pink and blue calico.”
Like Laura, little girls will adore this charming 20″ rag doll. Each doll is handmade in Canada, and, like the books, the attention to detail is stunning. Charlotte’s dress is an exact replica of the Garth Williams cover illustration. The dress unsnaps in back and can actually go in the washing machine, while the little red stockings and the black cloth shoes can be removed and spot cleaned. Her black button eyes are secured with safety clasps, and her hair is made of black yarn. (Although we admit no pokeberries were used in the making of this doll – just some non-toxic red ink!)
These are wonderful books to read aloud as a family, and the simple charm in the first book will make anyone a fan of the pioneer books. This gift includes some maple candy (of course), and the gift set comes wrapped in a pretty cello bag with a gorgeous bow. It’s a perfect gift for a child who is being introduced to the Little House on the Prairie Series!
